Frequently Asked Questions
Welcome to our FAQ page! Whether you have been to therapy before or this is your first time, there are often many questions we get from clients as they reach out for therapy. This page is here to help clarify some questions you may have as you embark on this journey. Please take a look at our page and reach out for a free consultation so we can answer any questions you may have.
Q. Do I need therapy?

A. This is a great question because anyone can benefit from therapy but not everyone needs therapy. We have a range of clients seeking services. These issues range from individuals struggling with acute issues that is are impacting their daily lives such as anxiety, PTSD, depression and addiction to people who want to do the deeper work and understand the root cause of their struggles. Our brains are incredible adaptive so you may have found some brilliant ways of coping with past negative experiences but would like to come to therapy and process these issues to gain a better understanding of yourself and others. Feel free to call for a free consultation and our providers would be happy to discuss what type of therapy would be most beneficial for your needs.

Q. What is the difference between in person therapy vs online therapy?
A. Here at Pollema Counseling Center we offer both online and in person therapy. Virtual sessions are very beneficial and often allow clients to access therapy more regularly because of the flexibility this platform allows. With that said, we love seeing clients in person as much as possible. We are embodied people and getting to sit with clients in the room offers an added benefit to connection and communication through non verbals that can be very impactful for the therapeutic process. All of our clinicians offer somatic-based therapy that can be done virtually but has a stronger impact in person.

Q. Is therapy covered by insurance?

A. Many insurance providers offer mental health coverage. Pollema Counseling Center does not accept insurance but we can offer a receipt (Superbill) with appropriate details for you to request reimbursement from your insurance carrier. Feel free to ask us about this in your initial free consultation.

Q. How do I prepare for my first therapy session?

A. We strive to make your first therapy session as comfortable as possible. It can be anxiety producing to talk to a stranger about the struggles you are experiencing. Your first therapy session is all about your therapist getting to know your story and understanding more about what brings you into therapy. At the end of your session, you and your therapist will collaborate on goals together so that you both have a clear idea of the work you want to do. Before coming in for your session, it would be useful to take time and reflect on what you are satisfied with and dissatisfied with in your life. This will help spark some useful conversations about the changes you want to make.

Q. How long are therapy sessions?

A. Standard therapy sessions are 50 min. We can also offer 80 and 125 min sessions as needed so feel free to discuss pricing and availability with your provider.

Q. What do I talk about in my session?

A. At Pollema Counseling Center we see therapy as a collaborative process. Depending on your therapy goals, you and your provider may be tackling a certain goal where you will be discussing one topic for several sessions in a row. Other times, you may be discussing issues that are present in your current life and bringing these issues up in therapy. It is important to note that at Pollema Counseling Center we are very passionate about helping clients to understand the root of their issues. You will not be coming to therapy to simply vent about issues but you will be guided to understand these issues at a deeper level so that we can collaborate on how to enact change.

Q. How do I know when to end therapy?

A. We believe that therapy exists to enhance your life and, for most people, it is not necessary to attend therapy forever. Every client is different and the ending of your therapy will often be correlated with the completion of your therapy goals. As we have mentioned, Pollema Counseling Center values collaboration between client and therapist. Therapists will have open discussions with clients when they are reaching their therapeutic goals to assess if therapy termination is appropriate.
