Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself: Getting to Know Elyse Dunham

As a therapist but more importantly, a human, I can understand the curiosity that comes with wanting to know your therapist as a person outside of the therapy room. So, I’d love to tell you a little bit about myself outside of my clinical work as a therapist.

I grew up right outside of Chicago in northwest Indiana. Because of this, my grandma instilled in our entire family a love for the Cubs and have many fond memories at Wrigley Field. I moved to Colorado about four years ago to move closer to my family, be surrounded by nature, and pursue my master’s in counseling. Since moving out here, I have gotten to explore the beautiful state and appreciate the beautiful earth around us. A few of my favorite spots are Red Rocks, the Great Sand Dunes, Hanging Lake, and Dillon Reservoir.

Outside of work, I love to travel locally, out of state, and internationally. I appreciate the experiences of eating new foods, seeing amazing sites, and interacting with locals on my travels. I also enjoy reading, outside of therapeutic books, my favorite genre is fantasy. A few of my favorite books include Circe by Madeline Miller, Chosen Ones by Veronica Roth, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V. E. Schwab, and Body of Stars by Laura Maylene Walter.

I also enjoy spending time with friends and family, going to concerts, paddle boarding, and crafting. I am a very relational person and I think this aids me in my work as a therapist but also find myself using those skills outside of the counseling room. I love in-depth conversations with loved ones to gain empathy and understanding for them and their experiences. With that, you’ll typically find me out and about with the people in my life having one-on-one conversations at coffee shops or bookstores.
