Everything You Can’t Learn About Me on Psychology Today

I’ve been there too…spending hours sifting through pages and pages of profiles on sites like Psychology Today trying to find the right therapist. Not only can it be overwhelming and intimidating, but it can sometimes feel like a one-way street. This person is going to know everything about my life, and all I can go off is something like “holistic, CBT therapist who integrates mindfulness and believes in holding space.” What does that even mean? (Side note: more on that in an upcoming blog 👀) Even if you know the therapy approaches you’re interested in, after a while, every therapist can start to sound the same.

Did you know...

Research suggests that the strongest predictor of therapeutic success isn’t the modality—it’s the quality of the therapeutic relationship. While evidenced based practices and thoughtful modalities are absolutely necessary in therapy, at the foundation of quality therapy work is the human to human connection. And that’s why I want to pull back the curtain and share a little more about who I am as a person outside of the therapy room.

So, if you’re curious about who I am beyond the therapeutic buzzwords, keep reading.

First: How I Got Here...

I’m from a small town in Mississippi—with all the usual tropes: lots of front porches, lots of sweet tea, and everyone knowing everyone. It shaped me in so many good ways, but I was drawn to a life outside of what I’d always known. I went to a small college in Birmingham, AL, and earned a BFA in Graphic Design. I never anticipated pursuing a career in mental health. While it always intrigued me, I thought that was the job for the tough people who have it all figured out and love to talk. It wasn’t until I had my own deeply healing experience in therapy that something changed and inspired me. It was also the first time I truly understood that therapists are just humans—imperfect, still growing, and showing up anyway...which somehow made the work feel even more powerful. That experience opened my heart to the work of therapy and ultimately nudged me to pursue it myself.

Outside the Therapy Office

Now I’m going to hit you with some rapid fire facts about me Q&A style because who really reads paragraphs?

Who I come home to? 🏡

  • My adventurous husband and our very only-child energy mini aussie, Cowboy

Most frequented Denver spots? 🌼

  • I tell everyone I meet about the Denver Botanic Gardens membership–you get a free guest every single visit and it pays for itself so quickly! It’s my favorite place for catching up on notes, a laid-back picnic date, or just a peaceful walk to clear my head.

  • Mister. Oso. Churros. 🤤

Favorite ways to move? 🤸‍♀️

  • Mat pilates and long (mostly flat) walks with Cowboy

My favorite way to caffeinate? 🥤🍵

  • Rosemary Vanilla Iced Matcha (extra, I know) from Middle State or a crisp, iced Dr. Pepper

Something I’m not ashamed to admit? 🍿

  • Pop culture. I absolutely have opinions on celebrity news I shouldn't care about. (See Halloween costume above...)

Random Daily habit? 📱

  • Keeping a streak on all the NYT games....yeah, I’m still playing Wordle.

What’s my therapy (besides therapy)? ☀️

  • Warmth. The sun... A sauna.... Basically being a reptile.

Propaganda I’m not falling for? 🙅‍♀️

  • That you can’t be educated on both trauma theory and TikTok trends.

My most used grounding technique? 🌳

  • The 5-4-3-2-1 practice. Going outside, naming 5 things I see, 4 I can touch, 3 I hear, 2 I can smell, 1 I can taste.

Those are all of my secrets for now. 🤫 I hope this post leaves you feeling a little more human and maybe a little more at ease. Ultimately, I believe therapy works best when it feels just that: human. When you feel safe, seen, and not alone in the room.

Curious about working together? 🤝 If something in this post resonated with you, feel free to reach out or keep following along. You can read more about my therapy approach here or send me a message using the button below!
